Taking note of the trailblazers

As the Varsity Kansas City gang catches you up on action throughout the metro, they take a little time offer up a suggestion for those running the 2019 MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships — every girl who qualifies this season should be named to the All-State squad. “They’re trailblazer,” says panelist Troy Chrisman. “They’ve set the stage for all the female wrestlers who follow. This year, this one time, they’re all All-State.”

Developing stories

We’re in the middle of the winter season and there are some storylines developing. Rockhurst basketball, Liberty wresting and Liberty North and Blue Springs swimming have been dominant. Both the Grandview boys and girls basketball teams look like they’re gearing up for deep playoff runs; but don’t count out another bulldog team— the Kearney girls are pretty darn good as well. Sit down, take a load off and catch up on some of stories coming out of the metro area.

Snow everywhere. Don't care.

The Varsity Kansas City gang isn’t letting a few inches of snow get them down. This week, we’re talking about varsity athletes donning super hero capes, giving the ADs some kudos and talking about a few former high school standouts now taking the collegiate and professional stage. We’ve even got a post-game interview with former Grandview standout and current Kansas City Chief, Xavier Williams.

Swimming, wrestling, basketball — the seasons are heating up

January is a fast and furious month when it comes to winter sports, especially for the wrestling and swimming teams. Our team of sports journalists dives into all the action to pull out some of the stories going on in the metro area varsity sports world.

He's walking (not really) to Memphis

The Varsity KC gang was a man short this week as our elder statesman, Thom Hanrahan, hit the disabled list for a week. Oh, and Cody Thorn — the guy literally phoned it in this week. He joined the show from the road as he was headed to Memphis for the Liberty Bowl. This week, we’re catching you up on holiday tournaments, especially the William Jewell Holiday Classic, and getting you ready for the fast and furious second half of the winter sports season.

First look at girls hoops

The Varsity Kansas City panelists start taking a look at the suburban girls basketball teams and looking at what to expect as the season progresses. Next week, we’re talking wrestling.

Boys hoops, tournament play & some kudos

As promised, Nick and the panelists start looking at what to expect from some of our area boys basketball teams, as well as a little insight into the other winter student-athletes starting to take center stage. This week’s show includes an interview with Blue Springs South head boys coach Josh Smith, senior Caleb Israelite and junior Cade Berg
